Andre Smith out of Sugar Bowl for improper dealings with an agent
Birmingham News / al.com
Alabama left tackle Andre Smith has been suspended from playing in the Sugar Bowl, possibly hastening an early leap into the NFL Draft. Smith, a consensus All-American and winner of the prestigious Outland Trophy, was sent home to Birmingham on Monday because of what coach Nick Saban called a violation of team rules.
Malzahn brings `smash-mouth' style to Auburn
Birmingham News / al.com
New Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn wanted to set the record straight. His no-huddle, fast-paced offense at Tulsa is indeed ranked first or second in the NCAA the past two years, but please, please don't make the mistake of thinking it is something it is not.
Rutgers' Teel and Britt are lethal combo
Birmingham News / al.com
Rutgers quarterback Mike Teel found himself in a strange land of barbecue and Southern drawls, but in a very familiar setting. Rutgers trailed North Carolina State 17-6 at halftime of Monday's Papajohns.com Bowl. Fittingly, Rutgers had been outplayed for a half - much like the Scarlet Knights had been outplayed for the first half of the season.
Bowl a success thanks to Wolfpack, Knights fans
Birmingham News / al.com
The Papajohns.com Bowl should thank its lucky stars for N.C. State. It wouldn't hurt to give a nod to Rutgers, either. The prospects of the Birmingham bowl building on its first two seasons seemed a lost cause when the SEC failed to qualify a team for the game.
Tigers use defense to top Bulldogs
Birmingham News / al.com
Auburn coach Jeff Lebo said his Tigers played "pretty doggone good" defense for 30 minutes Monday night. Twenty of those minutes must have been in the second half. Auburn held Alabama A&M to 12 second-half points on 13 percent shooting from the field on the way to a convincing 82-40 victory in front of an announced crowd of 4,002 in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
